My phone although never far from my person is not something I have to wave around to show people that I have it.

I use the Calender as a reminder from when to get up in the morning, to when to put the bins out and who to see and when. All timed perfectly to go off, so it is impossible to forget.

Twitter the official app, does nothing for me – will try and get Snaptu downloaded as my personal preference.

The phone itself is perfect to use, perfectly weighted, a joy to interact with.

So the BIG question would I USE the HTC as my normal phone?

NO – and that is purely because of the tethering issues – without tethering I have to carry another piece of technology and life is complicated enough

Even if I did share ALL my personal information with Windows Live (thus Microsoft) I still couldn’t use the HTC because of the tethering issues.

Thanks for listening to the rant! – I hope the whole experience allowed you to see inside my mind and thus the HTC Mozart

Telstra Exchange

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. Learn that the phone has a very short battery life.

27th November – Map function is cool and I felt like a movie star (Tom Cruise in Minority Report) with the ‘pinch zoom’ Kids don’t need instructions manuals!

28th November – My handset now has a name “IT”

29th November – The handset is quite well balanced and well designed. Learning I can’t tether to my netbook.

30th November – Photo Enhancer (which comes standard) with the phone is cool

1st December – The screen is very tactile and pleasant to use and the graphics for deleting emails is pretty (don’t look at me – I can’t help it if I’m female!)

2nd December – More definitive likes and dislikes list

3rd December – Possibly swayed to using the HTC Mozart as my every-day phone

4th December to 7th December - reviewing different tools within the handset and my likes and dislikes

and Friday at 7.30am - you get my final decision, as to if I continue to use the handset as my normal everyday handset.

For now I'm going to hold you in suspense - I've posted every day and I hope you've enjoyed my hates, like, dislikes, my fame (Tom Cruise moment)

Would love you comments - I know there's been plenty of people reading and for that I say thank-you!

Until Friday......................... I may have been the first, but I wasn’t the most prolific.
Another issue when playing games (Bejewelled) that if you put the phone to sleep, and then wake it up - it loads back to Bejewelled - not an issue, BUT if you want to make a call, you have to attempt to go back to the menu TWICE, to complete the task. Bejewelled tries to force a continuance!
Crashes - when I first got the phone, I had several problems with software crashing, but seems to be okay now. So not sure if issues will continue.

Reception –
Pretty much the same as Optus, no matter where, 40km from CBD no voice or data on Telstra, but voice and data with Optus. Always intermittent with both services.
In the middle of the Toolangi State Forest, no Telstra reception in some areas, but Optus worked and allowed data to be sent.
In the middle of Marysville, no Telstra reception, but had Optus (which is the same as the day after the fires) Only phone not destroyed and working was a Nokia N70.
So for me reception is pretty important, and the quality of the reception for Telstra wasn’t as good as I thought it would be, although would appear to be more stable than Optus, coverage with Optus was better in more places for where I live and travel. Optus being better in that having SMS capability in an emergency is sometimes all you can get.
As I’m writing this, I can only make emergency calls (40km from Melb CBD)

Hardware
The volume button is so big that you constantly find yourself pressing it inadvertently
The off/on/sleep button gets in my way constantly, simply I think due to the fact I am left-handed.
The phone itself, feels lovely in the hand, not cheap and it is well balanced. Which is always a consideration when I’m choosing a new handset.
I do worry about scratching the screen and if I was that way inclined I’d get a case for it, but that is just another piece of stuff getting in my way.
The screen is fantastic, the Nokia (when I’ve had to use it) is clunky and feels old-fashioned
The battery life (or lack of it) is another HUGE issue for me, if I can’t last 12-18
hours on one battery, then the phone won’t work me.

Things that gave me that oh-ah feeling
The Tom Cruise moment from Minority Report, where I discovered the pinched zoom WOW
Screensaver and picking the bit you want shown, rather than Nokia that just squishes the photo

Telstra Exchange

13th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. I didn’t have a problem using, but I have heard that some people disliked the layout etc, maybe this is not an issue for me, because I’m not a gamer nor wish to show off the number of app I have in my possession.

Photos – storage – both from the phone and also from my PC
I don’t think the memory is big enough. I have external memory cards in my phones for exactly that reason – that’s not possible with the HTC Mozart

Photos – Camera – seems to work well – I have some photos which I’ll load to give you an idea
I love the photo enhancer program – although basic, just changes the tone/colour of the entire photo, I like it
I dislike the fact I’ve had to change the default photo preview program, as it was changed when I downloaded Zunes. I’ve had to change it back to Windows Photo Viewer, which is the program I PREFER.

Zoom

No Zoom

Calculator – when my brain is too tired to work
Seems okay – I just use it for +/- nothing to spectacular

Maps
The mapping feature is great, but there are a couple of draw backs, one is the battery gets extremely hot. The battery charge is shortened when mapping is in use AND the requirement to touch the screen all the time to top the sleep mode. (Yes, you could change it, but this would be inconvenient every time you had to change it back.

Telstra Exchange

12th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. My biggest issue with this (was thinking about it today) was privacy – I’m not sure I want everything ‘out there’ somewhere for others to hack/locate if they should choose.

Contacts – a must have
Still no joy - Again because I use the Nokia as the main contacts list and not Google, I think that is where I’m having the problems.
Same as above, (Calendar) I need to import from Outlook into Google and then I don’t think I will have a problem, but again – I don’t like things sitting online, ‘in case of’ I wouldn’t like to be hacked and I do my utmost to ensure it doesn’t and IF it did occur, there would be limited damage.

Internet
Very easy to use – you can see numerous windows that are open, at the press of a button. You can favourite sites and have them as tiles on the ‘front’ page. Altogether a good experience.
The ability to zoom in and out by ‘pinching’ your fingers means even blind people (me) should be able to see the screen and the details without locating their glasses.

Speed dial – I don’t use voice commands
I’ve been referring to the call history to pull up the numbers I need, my brain still hasn’t got used to the contacts list, probably because it/I knows it’s not complete

Social Media
Twitter App - Bulky, slow and I prefer Snaptu, which auto-refreshs
The ‘ME” button seems like a great idea, offering social media updates, literally at the push of a button. Although I’m not a big Facebook – is easy to use on HTC, far easier than the Nokia (But I don’t use facebook often to worry about it)

TelstraOne
Which is a tile on the ‘front’ page, the layout is great, access to many thing from news to account details etc
I’m surprised that many screens don’t offer the pinch zoom and this is one screen that doesn’t.
As this is all provided within the Telstra account data allowances a great idea

HTC Hub
Which is another tile on the front page, the graphics are great, the weather application is great and the fact that it automatically locates the nearest relevant weather is fantastic, but it does make you wonder how much data is actually being collected (PS you can turn this off if you choose)
The Hub is supposed to be the central location for all your apps to be easier found – I found it easier just to swipe the ‘front’ page to the right and access areas that way.

To be continued....................

Telstra Exchange

11th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. (Remember each and every person has different needs and wants)

Review:-
Phone calls (obviously)
I have trouble answering a call when they come in, the button just doesn’t seem to want to work, probably operator error. But annoying to say the least
There is a slight drop out of the phone call when you pick up the phone to answer – ie, when you pick up off the desk, press the answer button and then put to your ear, I suspect the screen sliding from horizontal to diagonal is the problem

Text Messages – I have teenagers
The messages are fairly easy to compose, but I do find that I have to press more buttons than in the Nokia because I have to pick up each letter and then use the predictive words in the HTC, whereas with the Nokia you really only have a choose on 10 buttons and then the phone tries to guess (and gets it right 99% of the time)
I do like the way the predicted words are displayed at the top of keyboard, but again, many errors made when trying to ‘pick’ them up for usage, I end up with letters from the top row of the QWERTY keyboard.
I like the way the Messages are kept together in conversations, makes for easy tracking.

Emails – when I choose to use them
I’ve hooked up to my Gmail account, the emails are very easy to retrieve, send and view, and when you delete pretty! (It’s a girl thing)
I do find though that I’m not getting all the emails that come into my account, now that MAY be because I have a PC downloading emails at another site and maybe once read, don’t get downloaded to a phone. Technical – something that I’ll figure out one day

Games – to amuse me during ‘those’ times I need amusing
Love bejewelled, but I dislike the amount of time it takes to load, over 1min, which I find frustrating.
Bejewelled – doesn’t fall into sleep mode, when left untouched which could and would waste the battery
My son loves the games, as I said in one of my earlier posts, I tend to be a creature of habit and am happy with bejewelled.
The downloading of games and apps from the marketplace is pretty easy – but it’s not something I would do often – I’m not like so who seem to think it’s a competition to see how many ‘apps’ they can have on their phone.
The music that goes with bejewelled is fantastic (that’s the only music I’ve probably heard all week)

Tethering – to fire up my notepad to the ‘net
The phone CAN NOT be tethered – which is a HUGE hurdle for me, without tethering I need to carry a dongle and that means another contract. I have a data package with the Nokia

To be continued................

Telstra Exchange

10th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. I might be swayed yet. The HTC Mozart Keyboard is fantastic, soft and responsive. Sounds dirty doesn’t it?

So lets re-cap

I use my phone for……………..
Phone calls (obviously)
Text Messages – I have teenagers
Games – to amuse me during ‘those’ times I need amusing
Tethering – to fire up my notepad to the ‘net
Calendar – I live by it, with it and can’t survive without it
Contacts – a must have
Speed dial – I don’t use voice commands
Twitter App
Photos – storage – both from the phone and also from my PC
Calculator – when my brain is too tired to work

This week – I’m going to concentrate on each and every one of these. I’m not going to venture off into unknown territory. But I am going to see if it’s me (The Operator) or the programs I’m using and I’m going to try and sync the phone. Hopefully I’ll be able to report back before Monday how successful the operator has been, or what a failure the programs have been!

Let the games – recommence!

**
If you are on Twitter, follow the banter at #TelstraWP7

Telstra Exchange

9th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. When Zunes first loads, it shows music and movies and detracts from the ‘app’ button up the top and greyed out.
The number of errors when downloading via Marketplace and even Zunes, happens often, not just once or twice.
The number of times I take the phone off sleep, only to find that it’s been sitting in Bing, that is a concern, due to data usage. Not sure if it uses data in this state, but still concerning.

If you are on Twitter, follow the banter at #TelstraWP7

Thanks for listening to the rant!

Telstra Exchange

8th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. I uninstalled it, why have something not working. Son wanted to try again, so this morning attempted to download again, the download bar kept fluctuating between 22%-75%-23%, finally it did download. Son started to play it, but had trouble accessing. He figured out you had to twist yourself in knots to re-access. Here’s how he did it. Go to games icon, load Go fishing, boots back to main menu, press left arrow key on the front of the phone, then you can access the game. Weird!

SMS /TXT - I do like the text messaging and the way the words come up as an ‘offering’ to what you may want to use. I like the fact it doesn’t force you to spell correctly and force you into spellcheck every time it doesn’t like the spelling of a word. The buttons are still too small even for my rather skinny female fingers!

Emails - I like the way the emails (when I receive them) are deleted, they kind of throw up in the air and then jump down to be deleted. Graphics/pretty I know – but looks good

Twitter – I tried an extended period of tweeting tonight and I found poking at the ‘keyboard’ tiring and fiddly. I am using the ‘official’ Twitter program and I also found that awkward and didn’t display things the way I like. Doesn’t let you know when new mentions come in etc.

General layout – I still struggle with the ‘sleep’ button on the top right hand side. I’m left-handed – so if I have a pen in my left and reach for the phone with my right – I touch the off button and more than once have turned it off!

Games – I love the colour and graphics of some of the games that have been downloaded!

Screen – I sent a TXT from my Nokia today and found the screen to be sluggish and not very sensitive, by comparison, the HTC screen is light and fluffy, if that makes any sense. Another thing I’ve discovered, the HTC screen has a black border and the buttons are set in from there, whereas the Nokia the buttons go right up to the black border and makes it harder to operate sometimes

If you are on Twitter, follow the banter at #TelstraWP7

Telstra Exchange

7th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. I’ve downloaded Zune, I’ve downloaded Live Mesh and nowhere can I can any kind of program that will seamlessly connect the contents of my Outlook (and thus my Nokia phone) to this phone – I sure as hell can’t find it.

Another problem (for me) is the inability to tether to my laptop. I’ve ALWAYS used my phone, instead of a dongle, ever since Adam was a boy and this is a HUGE hurdle for me. I don’t want to carry more technology to do stuff that previously one handset was able to do.

The last two posts reviewing the HTC Mozart seems to be full of complaints, can’t be a good start, perhaps because I’m not a gamer, nor do I listen to music, nor do I take many photos with my phone. I use the phone book, the calendar, the alarm, and the internet AND tethering abilities.

I think part of my problem is that my phone is a tool not a toy and used accordingly. I don’t listen to music, nor watch videos from my phone, my kids have always been forbidden from playing with my phone without my express permission. I often play a game (Bejewelled, or similar) but more than not just THAT game. I’ve had this Nokia for 12 months and only downloaded one game and nothing else.

One thing I was concerned about was the fragility of the phone, it seems not to be of a concern, the phone is well weighted and smooth to handle, it’s of a weight I can appreciate. I dislike light phones, because I never know which pocket it’s hidden it!

I am going to spend the next 24-48 hours playing with the phone and trying to find some more positive things, I’m sick of complaining. There are good aspects of the phone, I just need to uncover them.

Saturday night I changed the APN to read Telstra.iph, at the same as doing that I noticed that I had NO Telstra coverage! Serves me right for living 40km from Melbourne CBD!

Since then, the battery life has vastly improved, so that is something. The average Joe shouldn’t have to do this though.

If you are on Twitter, follow the banter at #TelstraWP7

Telstra Exchange

5th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. I do have a blog (here), which is where I intend to post my thoughts and feelings.

I entered the selection process via the Telstra site, on impulse and before you know it I’m told I’m in!

I work mainly in the Construction Industry, I’m not related to anyone in the IT industry nor do I work for any IT companies. I’m not a programmer, I’m not a journalist, I’m not a reviewer. I work full-time, playing with book keeping ‘stuff’. Oh and I’m female – there have been whispers that it’s a bit of a boys club!

I didn’t agonise over the wording of my application, my fingers just took to the keyboard, and I pressed enter without really thinking.

If you haven’t already figured it out – I’m a veteran Nokia user and didn’t know the first thing about HTC – I thought for sure that would rule me out from any sort of review process.

But here I am with a ‘free’ handset and making comments according to my likes and dislikes – and you have to put up with 2 weeks of me agonising, dreaming, wishing, threatening to kill "IT” <-- as I refer to the handset! You can follow my thoughts, my rants and my praises here:- TelstraWP7 Label

Telstra Exchange

4th Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. At 9am I’m already down to ¾ of the battery life. There is supposed a fix coming out – but I’m finding it difficult to justify, having to carry a charger around just to use the phone, may be a problem sometimes.

Some discoveries I’ve made
You can listen to the ring tone you want to allocate to someone’s ID simply by pressing an arrow, takes a little while to get used to.
The ‘Map’ function is cool! Plug in where you want to go it and it takes you from here to there. (Trick – zoom in AND you can actually see buildings etc) Magnificent!
You can ‘pinch’ the screen when looking at photos, and other screens and zoom in and out etc.
By pressing the windows symbol – you can activate the voice commands, COOL!
I like the predictive text, when texting, it shows the words, including plurals and all you have to is ‘pick up’ the word with a long press.

Some things I dislike
The power button (which is also the wake button) is too sensitive, and when I pick the phone up – I often turn it off!
The disconnect call button is on the screen, rather than what I’m use to as a button down the bottom
The handset gets quite warm, when used for extended periods of time.
The Maps function, although lovely to use – requires someone to touch the screen every minute to stop the phone going into sleep mode. Found this annoying.

I have found a manual for a HTC “Mozart” and WOW - I’m learning some stuff! I don’t understand why there is no manual supplied with the Mozart. Hubby did say that kids don’t need manuals, the instructions are born with them, but for old farts like me – I like manuals!

I’ve just handed the phone over to my 13yo – this could be interesting. Hubby was right – they are born with the manual imbedded in the psyche. It’s sad. He took to it like fish to water. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

Today has seen me with a moments thought, that I felt like Tom Cruise in Minority Report, standing in front of a screen, and ‘flicking’ stuff around to find out more information, Not sure if that is good or bad!

That’s todays’ ‘lesson’ over – I’ve always had problem selecting a new phone, can take me 2-3 months to decide which one, this time I bit and bit BIG and I think I might be coping.

If you are on Twitter, follow the banter at #TelstraWP7

Thanks for listening to the rant! – Maybe tomorrow brings smiles

Telstra Exchange

3rd Day Review - How I became a Telstra Reviewer

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. In the first 5 minutes I was ready to throw it against the wall (well window) but I’m sure you know what I mean. It was so foreign to what I’m used to. Long presses, short presses, slide this, slide that. Really really confusing for a veteran Nokia user. Even though my phone is touch screen, it’s a Nokia E97.

Alright – sitting down with the others and trying to absorb everything. I figure out how to get the weather (cool pictures actually) and when raining you get a windscreen wiper swiping across the screen!

Tried to download twitter via the wireless network, but I couldn’t for some reason, everyone thought a problem with network congestion. So left it at that, figured I would try again later.

That was about as far as I got – although I did ‘kind of’ mention that if anyone could crash this ‘thing’ (as I was calling it) It would be me!

Still couldn’t get much happening, although I did learn that if the phone rings and you didn’t want to answer BUT you didn’t want to have to listen to it ring – you just flip the handset face side down and it’s silenced!

I also learnt that if you are on a call and want to go to loud speaker, you again flip the handset face side down and it automatically switches over to loud speaker COOL.

Another thing I’ve had trouble adjusting to is the touch screen, with the Nokia any implement can be used to touch the screen and make commands work. Pens, pencils, fingers, finger nails, they all worked, with the Mozart it’s only flesh and blood, so ONLY skin – found that very hard to adjust to – but getting used to it. The buttons are small, BUT not too bad.

So I get home and decide to plug into the home network, enter in the 26 digit WEP key. Get it wrong twice, but finally get it right. Try to download Twitter again, still won’t work. – something HAS to be wrong.

I call a support team member, we go through a hard reset and get it to work YEAH, I can tweet from my new phone.

Twitter downloaded, now to download Tetris, another favourite pastime of mine. Get 75% through the download and the battery dies *cries*

I go and get the charger from the magical unopenable box (refer above), plug into 240v and nothing, no lights nothing to indicate charging, not charging *cries*
Try the USB port, same thing *cries even harder*

Turns to Twitter, and viola, the brains of the party, told me to remove the battery and see if that works. *happy dance* It works – I now have a phone that is charging.

So from the last 5 hours I’ve learnt:-
1. Nokia users need some patience to relearn old skills
2. How to reset/reboot a mobile phone (never done with Nokia)
3. Have to remove the battery to recharge (Reason unknown)
4. The battery life is quite short (I hope it beds down)
5. I’m enjoying the challenge, but will I enjoy the phone? Only time will tell

If you are on Twitter, follow the banter at #TelstraWP7

Thanks for listening to the rant! – Maybe tomorrow brings smiles

Telstra Exchange

2nd Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review. I’m not sure how many people applied, but I believe I was lucky to be selected, lucky due to sheer numbers.

For the next week or two – you’ll have to put up with me loving/hating/adoring/admiring/squeeing and generally driving everyone nuts about the HTC Mozart. Don’t worry I‘ll still be ranting about everything else in-between, Just posting twice as much. I hope!

I know very little about the HTC Mozart – in fact I’m a renowned Nokia lover, having used nothing else for the past 10-15 years.

It’s going to be a very interesting time and I’m more than a little excited to be part of the new style product reviews.

I purposely haven’t done any research, nor have I looked for any reviews of said product. I want to do this alone and make it a full ‘newbie’ user experience for both you and me.

I’m not afraid to speak my mind, as I think my regular followers are aware.

So let the fun begin

Telstra Exchange

1st Day Review

“I have been given a HTC Mozart with Windows 7 Phone by Telstra free of charge to review.
